A practical guide to ServiceNow certifications

Certifications are a useful signal, not a substitute for experience. But knowing the landscape helps whether you're hiring or building your own career.

CSA — Certified System Administrator

The foundation. Everyone working on the platform should have it. It proves you understand the core data model, UI, and administration basics.

CAD — Certified Application Developer

The next step for developers — scripting, application design and the App Engine ecosystem. A strong indicator of genuine build capability.

CIS — Certified Implementation Specialist

Module-specific tracks (CIS-ITSM, CIS-CSM, CIS-HR, CIS-Discovery, CIS-SecOps, CIS-IRM and more). These map closest to real delivery work, which is why employers value them highly for specific projects.

  • Start with CSA, always.
  • Developers: add CAD, then a CIS in your delivery area.
  • Consultants & BAs: stack CIS certs for the modules you implement.
  • Architects: breadth across CIS tracks plus real design experience.
Certifications open the door. The conversation about what you've actually shipped is what gets you the role.

I coach ServiceNow professionals on exactly this — what to certify next, and how to position the experience you already have.
